El Gibbor is typically translated to mean “Mighty God” or “Powerful God.”
The emphasis is put firmly on Yahweh’s incomparable and matchless strength.
We should perhaps begin by asking the question,
“Is anything too hard for the Lord?”
(Genesis 18 v 14)
Yahweh himself answers this in Jeremiah 32. V 27
“Behold I am the Lord the God of all flesh: Is there anything too hard for me?”
Throughout the Bible, we see demonstrated El Gibbor’s mighty interventions and miraculous acts,
demonstrating his amazing might and power.
El Gibbor has the sense of a great warrior and champion, One who moves with courage and is valiant, audacious and strong.

Our El Gibbor is the God of angel armies (Psalm 46 v.7).
“YHWH of Hosts is with us, The God of Jacob is a tower for us.”

He is never outnumbered, outmanoeuvred or blind-sighted by the enemy.
Many today may shrink back from the military overtones, and may wrestle with this aspect of Yahweh’s character. However, Yahweh Himself is keen to be known as all-mighty.
In Psalm 2, we see that He does not look down on nations and view them as His equal in power but actually “laughs” at their plans, when they are not in line with His.
Zephaniah 3 v 17.
“YHVH your God is in your midst. He is mighty (gibbor) to save.”
Moses refers to Yahweh in Deuteronomy 10 v 17
“YHVH your God is the God of gods and the Lord of lords, the great and mighty (Gibbor) and the awesome God.”
How does this apply in our daily lives?
El Gibbor is able to handle situations which would otherwise be overwhelming.
His strength is matched with mercy and wisdom as He steps in to be our defender.
Although He is El Gibbor (The Mighty One), He offers His almighty power to bring us freedom and, ultimately, salvation. He does not use it for manipulation or domination.
He respects our free will and never excludes us when we run towards Him.
Read Psalm 8. Meditate on Yahweh’s amazing strength in creation and in His care for us.
We are honoured and privileged to call El Gibbor our Father (Abba) and friend.
